In 2007, I have hiked across North America. I left Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada) in late April and arrived in New York City (New York, USA) in mid-September.
I planned and organised the journey as a fundraiser for two philanthropic projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Through individual donations and corporate sponsorships I hoped to raise awareness about the current situation in the country as well as the necessary funds to participate in two humanitarian projects in the DRC: a mobile school project in the capital Kinshasa, which aims at educating street children and former child soldiers; and an emergency relief programme concentrating on the still war-torn Eastern provinces, which intends to provide protection, food, clothes and shelter to some of the many million refugees displaced by the deadliest conflict mankind has seen since World War II.
